Uluwatu temple in the distance.
This is the most famous landmark around the Bukit area. The Pura Luhur Uluwatu is such an exquisite monument situated on a headland at the westernmost tip of the peninsula.
The carving decoration of the temple are very well preserved in comoarison to many of Bali's temples due to extreemely hard dark grey coral stone used in its construction.
The Uluwatu temple was built by architect priest Mpu Kuturan around 11th century as one of the six major temple in Bali called the Sad Kahyangan - the territorial temples of the island. Then on 16th century the reformer priest - Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh rebuilt it in its present state. He is said to have attained his moksa here.
Around Uluwatu there are many fine beaches for surfing such as Suluban, Bingin beach and many others.
